Black Tree Monitor Lizards Hatch at Zoo

Great News from the reptile department who have successfully hatched five black tree monitors…

These stunning monitor lizards are native to the Aru Islands of  New Guinea, Indonesia and although their conservation status is data deficient, what is known is that adult populations are severely decreasing due to habitat loss and capture for the pet trade.

Jamie Gilks, Head of Reptiles here at Crocodiles of the World said: “The reptile team have been working really hard with this species and we’re delighted it has paid off with a great looking clutch. Only a handful of zoos in Europe have achieved this, which makes them extra special.”

Look out for the hatchlings on display in the zoo soon…
