Interested in volunteering at the zoo?

Volunteers can make a real difference to the success of a charity. Our Crocodiles of the World volunteers support our paid staff and help us provide our excellent, award-winning visitor experience.

Whether you’re passionate about crocodiles, reptiles, wildlife or conservation in general, or just want to help out, we’d like to hear from you. Our education aims and conservation commitment can really benefit from your enthusiasm.

Volunteers work to support our education, visitor team, garden and grounds, and even fundraising staff.

*It’s important to understand that volunteers will NOT be working with the animals at all.

Are You Who We’re Looking For?

  • We are not looking for animal experts, sorry, rather people who are enthusiastic about wildlife and conservation.
  • Are you confident and friendly? Comfortable speaking with our guests?
  • Are you reliable and able to support us with regular attendance?
  • We’re a bit tricky to get to by public transport, so are you able to get here yourself?
  • Do you want to learn more about zoos, wildlife and conservation?
  • Are you over 18 years old? Young or old, we’re interested.

Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteering

We have a number of opportunities for school students participating in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.

Volunteering for this scheme requires just an hour or two of volunteering per week for a limited time. Therefore, tasks are quite simple and include cleaning, sweeping, preparing the visitor areas around the crocodile enclosures and other activities that can be carried out quickly and with minimal supervision. Students still get to work next to crocodile enclosures, so this is something quite different than many volunteer opportunities!

To apply for the opportunities, download our COTW Volunteer Interest Form, and once completed, send to:

Note that there may be a delay in commencing your volunteering, as we get many students enquiring about D of E volunteering.

Work Experience

Crocodiles of the World welcomes work experience students. Many schools require students to arrange work experience. College students studying Animal Management must undertake work placements, as do university students studying zoology, veterinary medicine and related fields. We prioritise students already studying animal-related courses at college and university, with limited availability for school students.

As a fully accredited member of BIAZA, our zoo offers a great opportunity to not only get those necessary placements, but to learn what it really is like to work in a zoo, along with gaining knowledge of how zoos carry out conservation education and contribute to conservation projects for wildlife.

Animal husbandry, veterinary treatments, food preparation, zoo and conservation education, visitor experience, gardens and maintenance – all are areas open to gain experience for students.

Since crocodilians are our focal animals and naturally attract some interest in students, it’s very important that you understand that students will not be working directly with any crocodiles or alligators.

When you apply for one of the limited vacancies we make available each year, you can select to work with:

  • Animal Team
  • Education Team
  • Visitor Team

We fill up quickly each year, so the sooner your application is received, the better the chance that you will secure your placement for the dates you require.
