Hello Baby Binturong

We’re delighted to announce the birth of a baby Binturong here at Crocodiles of the World. Proud parents Winnie and Willow welcomed their first baby on 11th July and after several weeks in the nest, the little binlet (yes, that’s what they are called!) is now venturing outdoors under the watchful eye of Mum and Dad.

The love story so far…almost a year ago Willow joined Winnie at the zoo and they took their time getting to know one another but it all looked very promising. More recently, keepers noticed Willow getting larger and larger around the belly, then she gave birth to one very healthy baby. Binturongs usually have one to three babies in any one pregnancy, but may have as many as six! Willow is still fairly young herself, so one is just perfect for her as a first time Mum.

We’re pleased to report that Willow is a fantastic mum, and the whole family is doing well. Initially she had mostly been caring for the little one quietly in her hidden nest box and indoor nursery. However, since the weather has warmed up again, she’s now bringing baby outside and they may be seen nestled together amongst the plants.

Binturongs spend much of their time in the trees and are perfectly adapted to this thanks to 180 degree-rotating ankles, padded paws, long claws and a strong prehensile tail can help grasp branches when climbing up or down trees.

Unfortunately, Binturongs are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with their main threats across their range in South and Southeast Asia being habitat destruction and illegal hunting.

We are looking forward to watching the developments of this special little family.
